It's time to greet the Marines in your life because Nov. 10 marks the birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps. This year, Marine Corps Day celebrates 246 years of being in service to the country.

Marine Corps Day celebrates the establishment of the organization in 1775 by the Second Continental Congress, the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) noted. Although the Marines were abolished years later in 1783 after the American Revolution, Congress ordered the Marine Corps to be created on July 11, 1798.

Initially, it was on this date that Marine Corps Day was celebrated. However, that was changed in 1921 when the official day was established to celebrate the organization's birthday. Since then, the day has been observed on Nov. 10 to honor its "service, history and legacy."

This year, the annual message from the Commandant of the Marine Corps General David H. Berger and Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Troy Black lauds the men and women who have joined the military branch after Sept. 11, 2001.

"As we mark the 20th anniversary of those who fought the war on terror and are now retiring, we want them to know that we appreciate their courage, sacrifice, and the valor they showed during this conflict," Gen. Berger said. "The next generation of Marines may operate differently and in different places than the Marines who wear the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor today. Yet they will join a long and proud heritage of Marine fighters who have never turned from a threat or an enemy."

Anyone can celebrate the military branch's birthday. Those who have a Marine in their lives can send them a simple message to greet them or thank them for their service. After all, the occasion is not just for the organization, but for all Marines. People may also visit the iconic Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, which depicts six Marines raising the U.S. flag during the Battle of Iwo Jima.

As for Marine Corps veterans, they can celebrate with fellow Marines by reminiscing about their times together and honoring their fallen comrades.

No matter how one chooses to celebrate, the point is to recognize the sacrifices that have been made in the Marine Corps' 246 years of service.

On this day, let's have a look at some inspiring quotes that honor the military branch. (Courtesy: Gracious Quotes and Brainy Quote)
