The planned release of 3D Mario Switch remasters by Nintendo will be delayed past Super Mario’s 35th anniversary.

Reputable Nintendo podcast Nate the Hate, which recently correctly called out both the Indie World Showcase in August and last week’s Nintendo Direct Mini before they were announced, announced the delayed release.

Video Games Chronicle first reported in March that the Mario Switch remasters would see “Super Mario 64,” “Super Mario Sunshine,” and “Super Mario Galaxy” released as part of an anniversary compilation. The mascot is set to celebrate his 35th anniversary on Sept. 13.

Nintendo insider Nate said that the original plan for the 3D collection was for a June E3 announcement by Nintendo and celebrations leading up to the planned opening of the Super Nintendo World theme park in Japan.

However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these plans were set aside. E3 2020 itself was canceled while the opening for the Nintendo theme park has been postponed until things presumably go back to normal.

Nate now claims that the Switch remasters will be released beyond the Mario anniversary month and will move closer to Christmas instead. “I think now it’s going to be positioned more as a holiday game than as they had originally planned,” the insider said in a new podcast.

“I believe the original plan was that the 3D collection was going to come out in September, had these games been announced in June… then we probably would have had 3D World Deluxe follow it in either October or maybe even early November. Now that’s completely scrapped,” Nate stated.

Despite this delay, Nate the Hate maintains that the announcement of both the 3D Mario remasters and 3D World Deluxe will still happen in September to coincide with Mario’s 35th anniversary.

“Then we’re potentially looking at 3D collection either being early October… or the 3D collection is going to come out in November and be positioned as a prime holiday title, with a Mario-themed console, dock and all of that,” he said.

With a “Deluxe” version of “Super Mario 3D World” that was originally released on the Wii U in 2013 also planned, Nate the Hate now says this will also be delayed beyond the 35th anniversary and will instead come out in January 2021.

“Super Mario Bros.” was first released on the Nintendo Family Computer in 1985 in Japan before hitting North America months later. Two licensed controllers were recently seen online in anticipation of this milestone anniversary.
