Mark Hamill Clarifies ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Trailer Release Date Rumors
“Star Wars” fans are getting excited. The release of “The Last Jedi” is about three months away, but a new trailer is rumored to be coming soon. Star Mark Hamill may or may not have let the exact release date slip.
When a fan tweeted the Luke Skywalker actor about the new commercial, Hamill reportedly revealed the premiere date Tuesday morning. According to CBR, the star tweeted, “Watch Monday Night Football on Monday October 9—for no particular reason.” However, Hamill has since deleted the tweet.
The actor later backtracked his hint when he tweeted another fan stating that he did not know when the “Star Wars: Episode VIII” trailer would drop. “I have no idea. Disney will announce when they are ready. #WaitForVIIITrailer,” Hamill clarified.
Lucasfilm is keeping details about “The Last Jedi” tightly sealed. So far, there have been exactly two official videos released. One was a behind-the-scenes video while the other was the trailer. Typically, several trailers are released for big budget movies, so fans are getting a little anxious. They haven’t seen any new footage since April.
Of course, that isn’t to say there have been no spoilers dropped. On Force Friday, new merchandise from the latest “Star Wars” movie was revealed. One of the biggest surprises was the reveal of BB-9E, the dark droid. The bot belongs to the “astromech unit of the First Order that keep their starships and machinery operational,” according to a Disney press release.
BB-8’s evil counterpart isn’t the only new character in “The Last Jedi.” Benicio Del Toro plays a sketchy character called DJ. “We just need a codebreaker and he’s the best in the galaxy. Unfortunately, he’s very dodgy and only in it for financial gain. He doesn’t fight for any side,” Finn actor John Boyega told Entertainment Weekly.
There will be new characters who are more trustworthy too. Kelly Marie Tran’s character Rose has been teased to be a huge part of the December action movie. Rose is a member of the Resistance, and she’ll share a lot of screen time with Finn.
Similarly, details about Laura Dern’s Vice Admiral Holdo are scarce. She is a commander in the resistance and has some sort of relationship with Leia (Carrie Fisher), but anything beyond that is unknown.
Of course, fans’ favorite characters will return too. Rey (Daisy Ridley), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie), Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and more will appear in the flick.
Rian Johnson directed “Star Wars: Episode VIII,” but he will not return to direct the ninth installment. “The Force Awakens” director J.J. Abrams will come back to helm the last film in this trilogy.
Originally, “Jurassic World” director Colin Trevorrow was set to direct, but he and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy had some creative differences which forced the director to leave. Abrams’ new role has pushed the film back. “Episode IX” is now set to hit theaters Dec. 20, 2019.
Luckily, fans don’t have to wait that long for the next movie. “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” will be in theaters Dec. 15.
