‘Married At First Sight’ Divorces: All The Break Ups So Far
“Married at First Sight” has had some success stories, and a few participants even have babies together. However, marrying a stranger isn’t the best plan for everyone. The Lifetime reality show has resulted in at least 15 divorces.
Monet Bell and Vaughn Copeland
“Married at First Sight” Season 1 ended with just one divorce. Vaughn had worried right off the bat that there wasn’t enough chemistry between them, and Monet felt her husband wasn’t quite ready for marriage. Communication problems plagued their relationship, and they decided to call it quits at the end of the show.
Monet, who is still very active on social media, appears to be single, an experience she chronicled on the FYI spinoff “Black Love.” Meanwhile, Vaughn has a son with girlfriend Jenny Faber.
Davina Kullar and Sean Varicchio
“Married at First Sight” Season 2 viewers knew early on that this relationship was doomed. The couple didn’t ever live together full time. Davina needed to be in New York (which was a dealbreaker from the beginning) while Sean worked long hours in New Jersey. They only lived together a few days a week, and their arguments started on the honeymoon when Sean didn’t acknowledge when his wife was crying. The bickering only continued, and after six weeks, they opted for a divorce.
Davina is now Davina Davis. She married Donald Davis in July 2016.
Jaclyn Methuen and Ryan Ranellone
Jaclyn and Ryan opted to stay together in the “Married at First Sight” Season 2 finale, but the reunion special revealed they later decided to get a divorce. Jaclyn said Ryan really hurt her and didn’t put in the effort. They didn’t give many details, but they both seemed sad about it. The reunion special made it look like they might give it another shot — but that didn’t work out.
While Season 2 ended with divorces all around, there were at least lasting friendships made (and this was before the wives were introduced at the beginning of the filming as they are now). Jaclyn, Davina and Jessica still regularly post pictures together.
Jessica Castro and Ryan DeNino
Jessica and Ryan ended “MAFS” Season 2 by opting to stay together. The reunion show revealed that Ryan moved out shortly after the experiment ended, but they still tried to make their relationship work for four months. She alleged that he cheated on her when he was “busy” on Valentine’s Day and had a card from another woman in his house. He said that he knew he hurt her in ways she didn’t deserve.
The off screen drama, however, was much scarier than anything seen on the reality show. Jessica obtained a restraining order after DeNino allegedly threatened to kill her.
Vanessa Nelson and Tres Russell
Though they stayed together in the Season 3 finale, they had split by the reunion special. These two had some serious communication issues. Plus, Vanessa was so worried that Tres wasn’t ready for marriage that he felt like he always had to prove himself to her. When he stopped being intimate with his wife, Vanessa’s insecurities were amplified.
Vanessa went on to look for love in “Married at First Sight: Second Chances,” where she got together with Andre. Unfortunately, they announced their breakup about a month after the finale aired.
David Norton and Ashley Doherty
David and Ashley immediately had problems when the wife just always seemed uncomfortable. She wasn’t attracted to him and seemed distant. Once she heard he asked one of her friends to get drinks with him (something David claims was platonic), Ashley was done. Despite David wanting to stay married, Ashley wanted a divorce in the “Married at First Sight” Season 3 finale.
David went on “Married at First Sight: Second Chances” to see if he could find love with another woman, but he left the show a single man.
Sam Role and Neil Bowlus
They had a rocky start after Sam was very critical, but she eventually got over her preconceived notions of what a man should be. Unfortunately, that took a little too long. Neil still wasn’t happy and decided to ask for a divorce, even after Sam said she wanted to stay married.
The two are by far the friendliest of “MAFS” exes, at least according to their social media. Sam and fiancé Chris Wise welcomed daughter Isabella Myra in September, and Neil sent them several presents for their baby.
“Some people wonder if Neil and I are actually really good friends, and this is just a true testament of our friendship,” she said in an October 2018 Instagram video showing off his gifts. “More than ever, I appreciate my friendship with him, and I appreciate everything I’ve learned over the years from just our experience. I couldn’t be more thankful of our experience together.”
Derek Schwartz and Heather Seidel
This Season 4 couple still marks the fastest “Married at First Sight” breakup, with the split happening on the honeymoon. After Heather was uncomfortable with how affectionate Derek was on their wedding day, the honeymoon got heated when she confronted him about how much he smoked.
She told the experts she could only be with an “occasional” smoker, which Derek reasoned he was with smoking once a week. However, he said that he was smoking daily because he was on vacation, but Heather said she didn’t want to get to know him when he was in “an altered state of mind.” He spat back that she was an alcoholic.
Things only got worse from there with Derek getting jealous of a surf instructor and their serious communication issues. They officially decided to get divorced on Day 10 of their marriage.
Lillian Vilchez and Tom Wilson
These two had a pretty solid relationship from the beginning, but they had some fundamental differences. Tom wanted to be carefree and live on his bus while Lillian wanted financial security and a home without wheels. Still, they stayed together at the end of Season 4, but they announced their breakup after a little over a year of marriage. The two said they’d remain friends.
Sonia Granados and Nick Pendergrast
These two also stayed together during the finale and even the reunion special, but after a little less than a year of marriage, they announced their split. A reason was not given. However, viewers watched the two struggle with trust issues throughout their time on “Married at First Sight.”
Nick and Sonia announced their divorce in March 2017, and then he shocked fans with another big announcement in July of that year by announcing his girlfriend’s pregnancy. Nick and AfterBuzz TV host Heather Yerrid welcomed twins in February.
Sonia implied that Nick had cheated on her with the host. “Yep. While he was trying to ‘work’ things out with me but telling her different. Good luck to them both,” the Season 4 star tweeted after the news came out.
Nate Duhon and Sheila Downs
After some explosive fights where they took some low blows, the two stayed together at the end of “Married at First Sight” Season 5 and remained married in the reunion special. However, they divorced after a little over a year. People reports that Nate denied Sheila’s accusations that he was cheating on her throughout their marriage.
Cody Knapek and Danielle DeGroot
Though the two struggled to develop a romance, they said they’d work through their intimacy issues when they opted to stay together in both the “Married at First Sight” Season 5 finale and reunion special. However, they announced their amicable split after a little over a year of marriage.
Jonathan Francetic and Molly Duff
These two Season 6 stars had quite a bit of trouble from the start. Their blowout fight came after the cameras left one night and Jon recorded their confrontation. Jon was jealous that Molly was talking to another guy, and Molly responded to his accusations by calling him names. It wasn’t surprising when they decided to split early, but they tried to keep it civil on social media. Jon even called for fans to be nicer to his ex.
They still see each other occasionally. They even snapped a photo together at Shawniece Jackson and Jephte Pierre’s baby shower, but Jon is apparently dating someone else — “Married at First Sight” psychologist Dr. Jessica Griffin.
Ryan Buckley and Jaclyn Schwartzberg
These two had some trouble during disagreements. They both always wanted to win their fights, and Ryan had trouble letting things go. Still, they stayed together through the “Married at First Sight” Season 6 finale and reunion show. However, they announced their divorce after 10 months of marriage.
Mia Bally and Tristan Thompson
The trouble started when she wasn’t totally forthcoming about the stalking charges that were brought up against her. Tristan forgave her, but the two had a lot of fights about communication and trust throughout their marriage. Tristan once kicked Mia out, and in another incident, Mia left after telling Tristan she wanted a divorce on their mini-moon. It’s been a wild ride for these two, but they decided to stay together in Tuesday’s “Married at First Sight” Season 7 finale.
However, fans knew that they wouldn’t stay together. Court records showed that Mia filed for a divorce on Sept. 4.
In the Season 7 reunion special, Mia said she walked out on Tristan for the final time after her husband showed her photos of his ex-girlfriend. However, the two argued about who initiated the breakup.
Dave Flaherty and Amber Martorana
These two opted to stay together at the end of “Married at First Sight” Season 7, but they had several issues throughout the filming period. Amber was rather insecure, and Dave was very uncomfortable with the fact that Amber once dated one of his friends.
Fans likely were not surprised when the reunion revealed that Amber and Dave ultimately opted for divorce. The two had several fights after filming wrapped, including one blow up about Amber having dated one of Dave’s friends. Amber moved out, but she wanted to go to couples’ counseling. Dave didn’t want to go to therapy since he believed it wouldn’t work out anyway.
This article was updated on Oct. 23 to include the results of the “Married at First Sight” Season 7 reunion.
