Marvel Star Lia McHugh Explains Sprite's Motive Behind Betraying Sersi in 'Eternals'
Lia McHugh, who played Sprite in the movie "Eternals," explained why her character betrayed Sersi -- played by Gemma Chan -- during the final battle.
"Sprite’s motives in the ending were driven by her hurt and wanting to forget. A lot of what she did she would have never done," the 17-year-old actress told Inverse on Monday. "She wanted Arishem to emerge, she wanted our memories wiped."
The actress explained Sprite wanted to forget about all her pain and past because it was "awful and so deep" that it became difficult for her to bear it anymore.
Besides her past, she also wanted to forget about Ikaris, who was played by Richard Madden.
"She needed to forget it and forget Ikaris," she added. "But Sersi is her sister. [Sersi] She knows her very well. She understands how awfully hard it is for Sprite. I don't think she blamed her. She found forgiveness for her as much as she did for Ikaris."
In the movie, Sprite had no ability to grow old, and remained a kid forever, while being in love with Ikaris, just like her sister Sersi.
McHugh also explained why she wasn't picked by Arishem, who was one of the two Celestials that got to decide if the humans would live or die.
"I think because she's human now," she said. "But do you know what happened in the comics? I haven’t read any of them. But I saw somewhere a fan said that in the comics, she dies and gets brought back to life by the Eternals."
While McHugh admitted she never read any of the comics, the actress noted she would love to do another "Eternals" movie.
"Eternals" was released exclusively in theaters on Nov. 5, 2021. It dropped on the streaming platform, Disney+ on Jan. 12, earlier this month.
On the work front, McHugh began her career with "A Haunting" TV series, which was dropped in 2016. Since then, she has worked on various projects as a teenage kid including "Hot Summer Nights," "Totem," "Along Came the Devil," "The Lodge," "American Woman" and "Songbird."
She was recently seen in a horror movie, "A House on the Bayou," which was released on Nov. 19, 2021.
