Marvel's 'Agents of SHIELD' Pilot Picked Up By ABC
If you’re hungry for more live-action Marvel superheroics after “Iron Man 3” and “The Avengers,” you may soon be catching up with the Marvel universe every week instead of waiting for summer blockbusters. This weekend, ABC confirmed that it has picked up the pilot episode for Marvel Studio’s first TV series, “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”
According to Wired, ABC’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” series will star Clark Gregg, whose character Agent Coulson has served as the thematic link for the majority of Marvel’s blockbuster films. Joining Gregg will be Brett Dalton, Ming-Na Wen, and Chloe Bennet. Cult TV producer and director of “The Avengers” Joss Whedon will also be serving as the show’s executive producer, while “Dollhouse” writer Jeffrey Bell will be teaming up with “Smallville” writer Jeph Loeb for the pilot script.
However, Gregg’s casting brings up a couple of issues for fans of the series. While Agent Coulson has been a fan favorite for years, he appeared to die in last summer’s blockbuster “The Avengers.” At this point, it’s unclear exactly how Whedon and ABC will deal with the issue. It’s possible that Marvel will set the series in the past, or that “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” will feature a convoluted scene explaining that Coulson didn’t really die after all.
Despite the seeming death of the Agent Coulson character, including Gregg might actually be thematically fitting. For years, Marvel comic books have treated death as merely a temporary inconvenience (just try to keep track of how many times X-Man Jean Grey has died and come back to life), so perhaps a resurrection will make perfect sense to comic book fans.
Continuity issues aside, the decision to pick up “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is almost a no-brainer for ABC. Marvel’s superhero movies have been blowing up box office records for years, and it makes sense to want to get in on that action.
Just this weekend, Marvel’s “Iron Man 3” maintained its dominance at the box office, beating out the new release “The Great Gatsby” and taking home $72 million, according to Box Office Mojo. After only 10 days in theaters, “Iron Man 3” is close to earning a billion dollars worldwide. The film’s total worldwide gross currently stands at a staggering $949 million.
Read the official ABC description of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” below:
Clark Gregg reprises his role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel’s feature films as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. Coulson’s team consists of Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage; Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), expert pilot and martial artist; Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), brilliant engineer, and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), genius bio-chemist. Joining them on their journey into mystery is new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet). From Executive Producers Joss Whedon (“Marvel’s The Avengers,” ”Buffy the Vampire Slayer”); Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” pilot co-writers (“Dollhouse,” “Dr.Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”); Jeffrey Bell (“Angel,” “Alias”); and Jeph Loeb (“Smallville”) comes Marvel’s first TV series. “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television.
