Mary Kay Letourneau Always Wanted Vili Fualaau To ‘Man Up,’ Source Says
It didn’t come as a surprise to most when Vili Fualaau filed for divorce from wife Mary Kay Letourneau last month. After all, they started dating when he was in sixth grade and she was his teacher. But what’s odd is that one of the problems in their relationship was that Letourneau reportedly wanted Fulauu to “man up,” even though he was she was more than 20 years older them him — and was always aware of this.
“He said she nagged a lot. She always wanted him to man up and take responsibility,” an insider told People Magazine in an exclusive interview Wednesday about the 33-year-old DJ. “He complained about her sometimes, but all guys complain about their wives.”
Letourneau did the brunt of household chores. “She handled everything — like the money, the chores, all of it,” the anonymous person explained.

“[Vili] said that she would be pissed off that he wasn’t doing as much around the house as she was,” the source dished. “She was making the money, and he was trying to get his career as a DJ to take off, so he would spend a lot of time working on that.”
Fualaau not apparently pulling his weight was one of the main problems in their relationship. “She would get on him when he wasn’t doing his part,” the friend claimed. “She’d want him to be more involved in the raising of the kids, like go to their shows and things.”
Things weren’t always bad between the pair. “He complained like guys complain about their wives, but he loved her,” the insider said. “They usually got along. He didn’t complain when she’d show up to the clubs. He seemed happy to see her.”
Letourneau was 34 when she “courted” Fualaau, her 12-year-old student. The illicit affair was tabloid gold, but David Gehrke, the high-profile attorney who defended Letourneau in 1997, told People Magazine last month they truly loved each other.
“They were devoted to each other,” he said. “They courted for 10 years and they were married for 10 years. Yes, he was a minor, but they had back-channel contact during the time they weren’t supposed to be speaking. Not as regularly as they would have otherwise, but they were in contact. This was a couple who was in love. They had children together, and they raised those children.”
“I’m convinced they were totally in love,” the lawyer added. “But sometimes, people who are totally in love have trouble staying in love. They slowly drift apart. One day, you wake up and realize that things are different with your partner.”
Fualaau claimed he filed for a legal separation from wife Mary Kay Letourneau May 9 in a Washington State court because he wanted to start a business — and he can’t do that with Letourneau as his wife because she’s a convicted felon.
She went to prison for more than seven years for crimes related to their relationship. Letourneau admitted to two counts of second-degree child rape and served her full term. She gave birth to their first child before she went to prison and became pregnant with the second while behind bars.

“It’s not necessarily what you think,” Fualaau told Radar Online in an exclusive interview last month. “Everything is fine between us.”
“All the rumors that you hear between us. It’s fine,” he said. “Of course [we are still in love]. A piece of paper doesn’t break someone’s feelings!”
Fualaau wants to start a “Cigaweed” business, which is selling marijuana cigarettes. He needs to be licensed to do so.
