  • Mary Trump, niece of Donald Trump, called for him to resign on Thursday following his comment encouraging his supporters to commit voter fraud
  • Voting twice is a felony in North Carolina, as is encouraging others to do so
  • It's only the latest episode in a long-standing feud between the two. Mary Trump's memoir characterized the president as a dangerous narcissist

Mary Trump, the niece of President Donald Trump, on Thursday called on him to resign following his comments urging his supporters to commit voter fraud.

In a Twitter post, Mary Trump directed comments to President Trump: "For the first time in your life be brave: Resign and face the consequences."

An earlier tweet addressed the issue of voter fraud directly, with Mary Trump posting: "Vote early. Vote once."

Both messages received over 20,000 retweets and 100,000 likes.

Mary Trump, who recently released a book about Donald Trump, has over 544,000 followers.

In an interview with WECT-TV, an NBC-affiliated station in Wilmington, North Carolina, Donald Trump encouraged supporters in the state to test the voting system by voting twice. He said to “send it in and let them go vote. And if the system is as good as they say it is, then obviously they won’t be able to vote” again.

In North Carolina, voting twice is a felony, as is inducing others to do so. It's a vital battleground state for Trump, with a recent poll by Monmouth University showing Democratic candidate Joe Biden leading by two points.

Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnaney attempted to clarify during a Fox News interview that Donald Trump had not in fact committed a felony on live television, and had only meant to urge supports to check that their votes were counted properly. Donald Trump, however, soon chimed on Twitter to personally explain his comments.

It’s no surprise that Mary Trump would join the fray, considering her contentious relationship with her uncle and her recent book, "Too Much and Never Enough." The memoir, which sold 1.3 million copies in its first week, characterizes Donald Trump as a dangerous narcissist. Mary Trump routinely criticizes Donald Trump both directly and indirectly on social media.
