Maryland Mass Shooting: At Least 3 Dead, 3 Injured, Including An Officer, At Manufacturing Facility
A mass shooting Thursday at a manufacturing facility in Smithsburg, Maryland, has left at least three dead and three injured. The injured include the suspect and a Maryland State Police trooper.
Officers with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to the shooting at the Columbia Machine factory at 2:30 p.m. ET. Police at the scene found three people dead and one critically injured.
The injured victim at the scene was taken to a nearby hospital, according to Sgt. Carly Hose.
Police have not confirmed the identity of the male suspect nor a motive for the shooting.
The suspected gunman fled the location when officers arrived, which lead to a pursuit and an exchange of gunfire.
The suspected gunman was spotted by the Maryland State police trooper where they had a shootout that left them both injured, authorities said. Both were taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
"The state police responded, pursued the suspect, suspect fired and shot state trooper in the shoulder, who then returned fire and shot him back," Gov. Larry Hogan said at a press conference.
There is also no further threat to the public, according to Hose.
