  • Kevin Martin was upset after the local authorities did nothing about the potholes
  • Martin had to foot a $600 bill after the potholes caused his tires to flatten
  • The Christmas trees have been since removed and the potholes are fixed

Fed up with a series of potholes on a busy road in his neighborhood, a Massachusetts man came up with a bizarre idea to call the local government's attention to the problem: He planted Christmas trees into the potholes.

Kevin Martin, a resident of the town of North Attleborough in Massachusetts, said he took this step after his repeated pleas to the local government to mend the potholes fell on deaf ears.

Speaking to NBC 10 News, Martin said he was left with a $600 bill after the potholes had caused all four tires of his car to flatten while he was on his way to pick up dinner Saturday night. Martin told the station that he was driving along Route 1 near Allen Avenue when he heard a loud bang from underneath his car.

"Ended up with four flat tires and had to leave the car there," Martin told the station.

Martin said that he believed he wasn’t the only one to have his tires flattened due to the potholes. "I just, you know, I kind of was fed up," he told the station. "I needed to make sure that it got fixed one way or another. I know that I'm not the only person who's gotten flat tires from that area."

This urged Martin to gain the local government’s attention by turning the potholes into planters. On Monday, Martin filled the potholes with some soil and planted Christmas trees bought from a local store. "I waited until fresh [sic] early morning and did it on my way to work today," he told NBC 10 News.

The community’s police department earlier posted images of the Christmas trees on their Facebook page. "Looks like someone is getting into the Christmas spirit early," they had captioned the post. However, the post was deleted later.

According to NBC 10 News, the trees were removed and the potholes were fixed on Monday afternoon. Meanwhile, the director of the North Attleborough Public Works said that attempting to fill the potholes on a busy street like Route 1 on one's own can be extremely dangerous.
