Math Teacher Files Sex Discrimination Lawsuit Over Topless Photo Found By A Student
A sex discrimination lawsuit has been filed in New York by a teacher after a student found a topless photo of her taken in 2016.
Lauren Miranda, a math teacher with New York’s South Country School District, sent the photo to another teacher at the school that she was romantically involved with three years earlier, WPIX, a New York City CW affiliate reported.
How a student came into possession of the topless selfie remains unknown, but Miranda, 25, has since been fired from her job with the Long Island school district. Miranda was placed on administrative leave in January and was fired from her teaching position last week.
According to Miranda’s attorney, John Ray, from the law firm Mitev & Associates, LLP, she “was an excellent math teacher by all accounts. Long ago, she sent her topless unremarkable selfie to her companion, never to anyone else. By unknown means, a student obtained it. The school district took possession of it, excoriated her, and fired her because her breasts were displayed. This would never have happened to a male teacher.”
In court documents, Miranda claims that the school district objectified women and contended that she was not a good role for students because of the photo.
Miranda told The Washington Post, “My career has been ruined, my reputation has been tarnished, I have been stigmatized. Everything I have worked so hard for since I was 18 years old has been stolen from me because of one innocuous selfie.”
In her sex discrimination lawsuit, Miranda is seeking $3 million in damages from the school district, according to court documents.
