'The Matrix Resurrections' Director Explains New Narrative, Says 'Technology Paradoxically Brought Us Closer'
Lana Wachowski, the director of the highly anticipated movie, "The Matrix Resurrections," opened up about the film's narrative and explained how technology has limited humans.
"Technology paradoxically brought us closer together while also isolating or inculcating us from each other," the 56-year-old director told Entertainment Weekly on Tuesday.
Wachowski further explained how technology has limited humans and how it played an important part in the storyline of the upcoming "Matrix" installment.
"The power of technology to trap or limit our subjective reality was an important part of the new narrative for Matrix Resurrections," Wachowski added.
Wachowski also revealed the reason behind making the sci-fi action franchise's next installment that revolves around the story where Neo's character re-enters the Matrix world again.
"Art is a mirror," Wachowski told the outlet. "Most will prefer to gaze at the surface but there will be people like me who enjoy what lies behind the looking glass. I made this movie for them."
Jessica Henwick, who is a new addition to the franchise, also reflected on how working on "The Matrix Resurrections" is different compared to her earlier work on the sci-fi genre, including "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."
The 29-year-old actress noted the movie is going to display a "new tone" and it comes with a "new look" compared to the previous installments.
Moreover, she noted the movie was going to involve a lot of humor, which was surprising for Keanu Reeves too.
Laurence Fishburne, who played Neo's mentor in all the installments of the movie, noted "Matrix" was one of the most "grounded in reality, ironically." "There are all of the high concepts surrounding The Matrix within our story, but really there's so much heart and humanity that's driving this narrative," Fishburne added.
The first installment of the franchise was dropped in 1999, while the second installment, "The Matrix Reloaded," was released in 2003. In the same year, the third installment, "The Matrix Revolutions," was also released.
"The Matrix Resurrections" will mark the fourth installment of the franchise that is slated to release on Dec. 22. The movie also stars Priyanka Chopra, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jada Pinkett Smith, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Neil Patrick Harris and Daniel Bernhardt.
