Matthew McConaughey is setting the record straight on Kate Hudson’s surprising revelation about their onscreen kiss in “Fool’s Gold.”

Hudson spoke about their kiss in the 2008 film during her October appearance on Gywneth Paltrow’s “Goop” podcast. The Fabletics founder, who said she hadn’t had “the best kissers” when it comes to her onscreen partners, said that McConaughey “had snot all over his face” when they filmed a kissing scene for “Fool’s Gold.”

But McConaughey defended himself in a new interview with Yahoo Entertainment, explaining that it hadn’t been an easy scene to shoot. He shared that the sequence prior to the kiss involved him coming out of the ocean.

“It's like, 'OK, here's the scene: You're in the middle of the ocean. You go under the water, so on 'Action,' go into the water and then come up out of the water like you're gasping for air. You're glad to be alive! Then you look at each other and you swim to each other and go into an embrace,’” he explained.

“There's a lot of salt water and snot and all kinds of stuff that are in between all those, and so you're doing that and you're like, 'OK, I think that worked, but did that look any good?' They're like, 'No, we better do another take,'” McConaughey continued.

McConaughey did acknowledge that because of the circumstances at the time, they didn’t have a “nice romantic kiss.” He also quipped that there’s still time to do a better one.

“So many of...Kate and I's kisses have been awkward,” McConaughey said, adding, “We're still like, 'Hey, can we ever get a kiss where it's just like the temperature's right, and nobody's interrupting, and the ocean's not wiping us away, nobody's dropping stuff on us above our head?'”

McConaughey and Hudson were also partnered for the 2003 film “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.” Although the 41-year-old didn’t have luck with her onscreen kissing partners, she described Billy Crudup, whom she starred with in the 2000 comedy film “Almost Famous,” as “good.”

Unfortunately, Hudson’s kissing scene with Crudup didn’t make it into the final cut of the movie.

Meanwhile, Paltrow has also had her fair share of awkward kisses on screen. She admitted to Hudson during their chat that kissing her “Avengers” and “Ironman” co-star Robert Downey Jr., who has been her love interest in seven movies over 10 years, was gross because they had become as close as siblings.

“With Robert, like, when I kissed him, I was like, 'You've got to be kidding me, this is literally like kissing my brother,'” Paltrow revealed.
