Matthew McConaughey Says 'I Am Not Running For Political Office' [Watch]
Matthew McConaughey confirmed that he is not running for political office and addressed the tragic incident of the mass shooting in Uvalde, the town he was born.
"I am not running for political office," McConaughey said while speaking with host Bret Baier on "Fox News' Special Report" Tuesday. "I'm here because on the 24th of May, I got the news that there was a mass shooting in the town that I was born in, Uvalde, Texas."
The 52-year-old actor recalled what he did when he heard about 19 children being gunned down in his hometown. The actor said he straight away went home and hugged his kids "a little bit longer and tighter than usual."
"The next morning we loaded up and went down to Uvalde," he added. "The main thing that we got out of it, was that every single family that lost a loved one or child said, 'You know what, I just want some way for the loss of my loved one's life to matter.'"
McConaughey stressed that his motive is to make every life matter.
The "Interstellar" actor further shared how this trip to Uvalde was life-changing for him and his wife, model Camila Alves.
"I'm a different man now. My wife's a different woman now," he explained. "My children, I believe, are different children now. And our hope is that we can come out of this, especially for my children, we come out of this valuing our own life, and valuing life more than we did before."
"And appreciate the things that we do have and the opportunities we have, in our life and to change things for the better," he said.
McConaughey and Alves have three kids - Levi, 13, Vida, 12, and Livingston, 9.
McConaughey also gave a speech at the White House on Tuesday where he urged lawmakers to bring the changes required for safer schools in the country, and also shared plans including increasing minimum age for buying guns and doing a universal background check.
On the work front, McConaughey lent his voice for musical comedy movie "Sing 2," which was dropped in December 2021.
