McDonald’s Customer Killed In ‘Freak Accident’ At Drive-Thru While Paying For Food
A McDonald’s customer in Canada is dead following a “freak accident” at the drive-thru in Edmonton, where a man was crushed by his own vehicle.
The incident took place about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday after a man arrived at the drive-thru and placed his order. However, after paying for the food at the window, he dropped his bank card on the ground and attempted to pick it up.
When the customer opened his door to retrieve the item, the vehicle continued to roll forward and pinned the driver between the car door and a structural piece of the restaurant and crushed him.
Tania Visintin, the constable of the Vancouver Police Department, revealed emergency responders tried to save the man’s life but were unsuccessful. His identity had not yet been released.
“Efforts were made by first responders to revive the man, but tragically, he died on scene. This is an absolutely heartbreaking scenario. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of this man,” she said in a statement.
“People aren’t used to seeing this type of incident happen, especially at your workplace. I would assume everyone is shaken up.”
Victim services will be available to McDonald’s staffers who may have been impacted by the accident.
Visintin noted it was an unusual accident since there was only one vehicle involved. The Vancouver Police Collision Investigation Unit will be working with the BC Coroners Service to investigate the incident.
“Usually when we hear about a fatal motor vehicle accident it [is] usually, typically a crash with another vehicle. So the fact that no other vehicle was involved… this seems like a freak accident,” she explained.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident at McDonald’s or has dash-cam footage from the area when the accident occurred is encouraged to contact investigators.
