Taiwanese chipmaker Mediatek has recently announced its partnership with another industry giant, Intel, in making computers with 5G integrated modems. Reportedly, Dell and HP are the first original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to deliver laptops powered by Intel and MediaTek’s 5G solution.

These new modems will be based on the Helio M70 5G model that was announced earlier this year. This partnership is part of MediaTek’s 5G-related projects including the release of new 5G-powered smartphones by next year.

“Our 5G modem for PCs, developed in partnership with Intel, is integral to making 5G accessible and available across home and mobile platforms,” said MediaTek President Joe Chenin a press release.

“5G will usher in the next era of PC experiences, and working with Intel, an industry leader in computing, highlights MediaTek’s expertise in designing 5G technology for global markets. With this partnership, consumers will be able to browse, stream and game faster on their PCs, but we also expect them to innovate with 5G in ways we have not yet imagined.”

Intel, on their part, talked about their expectations about the partnership, especially with the promise of innovation the 5G technology will cater to users that include faster speeds and less data loss.

“5G is poised to unleash a new level of computing and connectivity that will transform the way we interact with the world,” said Gregory Bryant, Intel executive vice president, and general manager of the Client Computing Group, in the same press release. “Intel’s partnership with MediaTek brings together industry leaders with deep engineering, system integration and connectivity expertise to deliver 5G experiences on the next generation of the world’s best PCs.”

The first brands to have 5G integration using MediaTek’s latest technology will be available on Windows laptops in 2021. In the meantime, smartphones with MediaTek’s new Dimenstiy 1000 5G chipset is expected to arrive in the market by the first quarter of 2020.
