Meet ‘Guernsey Literary And Potato Peel Pie Society’ Cast Before Netflix Premiere
Netflix’s new historical drama, “Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society,” looks a lot like a “Downton Abbey” reunion. The story is about an author finding a book club after World War II and falls in love, and viewers will recognize quite a few of the stars.
Lily James as Juliet Ashton — She has also starred in “Cinderella,” “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” and “Baby Driver,” but “Downton Abbey” fans will recognize her as Rose. James is currently on the big screen in “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” but she isn’t playing a free-spirited woman who has three potential baby daddies in this flick.
Juliet is an author who needs inspiration after the war. She finds it when she gets a letter from a farmer who tells her about the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.
Michiel Huisman as Dawsey Adams — This isn’t Huisman’s first time playing the love interest to a complicated woman. He is best known for his role as Daario on “Game of Thrones,” but fans also may have seen him in “Nashville,” “Orphan Black” or “Age of Adaline.”
Dawsey is a farmer who simply intended to write a letter to the author. He never expected her to come to his little island, and he certainly doesn’t want her to base a book on their society.
Jessica Brown Findlay as Elizabeth McKenna — After getting her big break on “Downton Abbey” as Lady Sybil, Findlay has appeared in movies such as “Winter’s Tale” and “Victor Frankenstein.” She is also a series regular on Hulu’s “Harlots.”
Juliet is told that Elizabeth, the society’s founding member, is overseas. Dawsey is the guardian of her daughter while she is away. However, there is much more to Elizabeth’s story than that. Juliet soon learns that Elizabeth is missing.
Glen Powell as Markham “Mark” Reynolds — Powell first had his big break as an irritating frat boy on “Scream Queens,” but he stole hearts this summer in another Netflix original, “Set It Up.”
His character Mark is an American soldier who proposes to Juliet before she leaves to visit the society.
Matthew Goode as Sidney Stark — Goode played Henry Talbot on “Downton Abbey,” and he played Toby Armstrong-Jones on “The Crown.” Those who prefer TV shows set in the present might recognize him from a stint on “The Good Wife” as well.
Sidney is Juliet’s publisher.
Penelope Wilton as Amelia Maugery — Wilton had success for decades before playing Isobel on “Downton,” and her career is still thriving. Recently, she has appeared in the movies “Zoo,” “The BFG” and “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.”
Her character Amelia is a member of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, and she is the most concerned about Juliet’s arrival.
Katherine Parkinson as Isola Pribby — Fans might recognize the BAFTA winner from the TV shows “Humans,” “The IT Crowd” or “The Kennedys.” She has also starred in movies such as “Pirate Radio” and “How to Lose Friends and Alienate People.”
Isola is a member of the book club and sees Juliet as a true friend.
Tom Courtenay as Eben Ramsey — The actor has been working since the 1950s in projects like “Doctor Zhivago” and “The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner.” More recently, he has been in “45 Years” and “The Golden Compass.”
Eben is a combination of three characters from Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows’ novel. He is a fisherman, postmaster and creator of the potato peel pie recipe.
“Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” will premiere on Netflix Friday.
