Meet Jalaiah Harmon: 6 Fun Facts About The 'Renegade' Dance Creator
The world’s most viral choreographer is a 14-year-old girl from Atlanta. Until a few days ago, no one knew who she was.
Harmon is the originator of the “Renegade,” a dance trend on TikTok that accompanies the song “Lottery” by K Camp. Teenagers all over the internet have been performing the fast-paced sequence, which incorporates so many trending dance moves, without realizing who to credit for the choreography. Many TikTok users assumed the dance was created by Charli D’Amelio, the 15-year-old TikTok celebrity who is known for making up choreography of her own.
“I was happy when I saw my dance all over,” Harmon said to The New York Times. “But I wanted credit for it.”
Now, as Harmon’s name becomes more well known and her popularity rises, she is finally beginning to reap the benefits of her creativity, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Here’s what we know so far about the teen star:
She performed live at the NBA All-Star game
At the NBA All-Star game in Chicago on Sunday, Harmon was brought out onto the floor to perform her “Renegade” dance. After performing solo at first, she then danced again with the mascot (Benny the Bull) and the Bulls’ dance team.
She got a shout out from K Camp
Rapper K Camp, whose song inspired the original choreography, gave Harmon a shout-out for “helping make Lottery the BIGGEST song in the world.” He Tweeted a video of himself dancing in the background as Harmon and her friend Skylar performed the "Renegade" dance.
Kim Kardashian West posted a video of Harmon dancing
Kim Kardashian West was also at the NBA All-Star game and was front and center to watch Harmon perform the dance for the arena. She then praised the teen star in her Instagram story.
She dances all of the time
When she isn’t busy going viral, Harmon is dancing for pure joy. She practices dance routines and new choreography in the bathroom mirror of her suburban home in Fayetteville, Georgia. She takes classes in ballet, jazz, hip-hop, tap, lyrical and tumbling at the Sky Dance Academy studio, and competes in dance competitions.
“It makes me happy to dance,” she said.
She tried to take credit for her dance when it first went viral
One of the most frustrating aspects of the viral success of “Renegade” for Harmon was watching it blow up and no one realizing she created it, BuzzFeed reported. In January, Harmon posted a Tik Tok of the screenshot, “who created the ‘renegade dance’?” with her own name attributed as the creator, and then captioned it, “IT WAS ME!! SPREAD THE WORD!!” Still, it wasn’t until a few weeks later that she received recognition.
She’s gained a ton of new Instagram and Tik Tok followers
Since her recent viral success, Harmon has over 300,000 followers on Instagram and 1.1 million on TikTok where she continues creating new choreography.
