Meet TNT’s ‘The Alienist’ Cast [PHOTOS]
“The Alienist” premieres Monday night, and there will be quite a few familiar faces in the drama. The historical murder mystery, about a psychologist trying to figure out how to catch a serial killer, features a cast of established actors.
Dakota Fanning as Sara Howard — Sara, the leading female on TNT’s “The Alienist,” is a headstrong secretary at Police Headquarters in New York City. In 1896, young male prostitutes start being murdered, and if Sara helps solve the case, it might just help her achieve her dream of becoming the first female police detective in the city.
Chances are most viewers have seen Fanning before. She started working in 2000 and appeared in films like “I Am Sam” and “War of the Worlds” as a kid. As an adult, Fanning mostly makes indie movies like “Night Moves” and “American Pastoral.” “The Alienist,” which is a 10-episode miniseries, marks Fanning’s first TV show since 2004.
Daniel Brühl as Dr. Laszlo Kreizler — Dr. Kreizler is a criminal psychologist, also known as an alienist. Studying mental pathologies is a relatively new profession, so the police commissioner wants Laszlo to conduct his investigation secretly. He uses psychology and early forensic investigation techniques to determine who is behind the ritualistic killings. His passion and intensity for his job, however, can make him an outcast.
Superhero fans will recognize Brühl as Zemo, the villain in “Captain America: Civil War.” He also appeared in films like “The Colony” and “The Zookeeper’s Wife.” “The Alienist” is the Spanish actor’s first U.S. TV series.
Luke Evans as John Moore — John is the society illustrator for the New York Times, and he has been friends with Dr. Kreizler and the police commissioner for a long time. He’ll be mourning the loss of a former lover when he is called in to assist with the murder investigation.
Like Fanning, this is Evans’ first role as a series regular. The British actor has starred in “The Girl on the Train,” the “Hobbit” movies and three “Fast and Furious” films. He also appeared as Gaston in last year’s biggest box office hit, “Beauty and the Beast.”
Robert Wisdom as Cyrus — Cyrus is Dr. Kreizler’s valet, but their relationship isn’t just professional. The psychologist helped Cyrus reform. He has a dark past that will soon be revealed.
After nearly 30 years in Hollywood, Wisdom has had a long career. Viewers might recognize him from the 1997 film “Face/Off” or HBO’s “The Wire.” More recently, he has had extended roles on “Chicago P.D.,” “Flaked” and “Ballers.”
Q’orianka Kilcher as Mary — May is Kreizler’s maid. She is mute, but she and the psychologist share a special connection.
Kilcher started making movies over a decade ago when she landed the lead role in “The New World.” She has since scored parts in “Sons of Anarchy,” “Longmire” and “Te Ata.”
Meet the whole cast when “The Alienist” premieres Monday, Jan. 22 at 9 p.m. EST on TNT.
