Meghan Markle Didn’t Inform Palace About Friends’ Interview: ‘It’s A Slippery Slope’
Meghan Markle did not inform Kensington Palace that she gave five of her closest friends the go signal to speak on her behalf during a recent interview.
Rebecca English, a royal reporter for Daily Mail, said that the palace only knew about the interview minutes before it was published. According to the journalist, experts and royal insiders believe that Markle had been wrong to allow such an interview to be published.
However, the palace refused to comment on whether the unnamed friends of the Duchess of Sussex cooperated with People at the direct request of Markle, or at the very least, with her permission.
“It was clear, however, that the palace press office had not been involved. The Mail understands the palace was informed by magazine staff only minutes before publication about the article’s exceptional detail – including a verbatim account of a letter written by Meghan, 37, to her estranged father,” she wrote.
Former Buckingham Palace press secretary Dickie Arbiter, who previously worked for Prince Charles and Princess Diana, said that he’s worried the interview would only exacerbate the issues instead of containing them. He said that assuming that the interview was conducted with Markle’s approval, it just opened a Pandora’s Box.
“The issue with her father is an open wound and I’m not entirely sure it is the best idea to aggravate that. It doesn’t entirely surprise me that the press didn’t know, that said,” he said.
Meanwhile, Imogen Lloyd Webber, a royal correspondent also warned the Duchess of Sussex of the repercussions of speaking out. She said that once someone starts discussing the issues, things will become like a slippery slope.
When asked what she found most surprising about Markle’s friends’ interview, she said that she was shocked to know that the “Suits” alum hasn’t changed her phone number and that her dad can actually get in touch with her.
Webber said that Markle is expecting her first child, and this is a piece of exciting news that royal fans have been tuning in for months. The arrival of the royal’s firstborn in the Spring will be a bit of a reset.
