KEY POINTS

  • Meghan Markle is no longer bound to royal constraints after stepping down as a senior member of the royal family
  • The Sussexes will focus on gender equity, racial injustice, and youth empowerment moving forward
  • Prince Harry's statement about the Commonwealth’s history received mixed reactions from royal experts

Meghan Markle is free to speak from her heart now that she is no longer bound to the royal constraints, as per Omid Scobie, a royal correspondent and author of "Finding Freedom," Markle now speaks "from the heart.

The Duchess of Sussex spoke at the Girl Up Leadership Summit on July 16 and her speech was noticeably "punchier." According to Scobie, Markle now speaks "from the heart" on topics close to her because she is no longer adhering to the "constraints" of royal life.

"This was Meghan really being able to talk without the constraints of some of the things you might have to bear in mind when writing a speech as a working member of the royal family," Scobie said in the Heirpod podcast.

"I understand she spent a long time preparing for this speech. Usually we see members of the royal family reading from very tight scripts when they go up onto a stage, I understand Meghan had bullet points. She spoke more from the heart than from a script."

Scobie also shared some details from his meeting with the Sussexes. According to him, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be more passionate about the issues that they are working on.

"I had an interesting conversation with Team Sussex after this happened. They said this speech really spoke to many of the issues she will continue to focus on passionately moving forward, gender equity, racial injustice, youth empowerment," he added.

"This worked a really great preview for the Duchess of Sussex and some of her future speaking engagements.”

Just recently, Prince Harry and Markle spoke about the history of the Commonwealth. Prince William's younger brother said the Commonwealth should "acknowledged the past" even if it’s uncomfortable. Markle added that it's a time of "reckoning" and the people should "own" their past wrongdoings.

Prince Harry’s statement received mixed reactions from royal experts. Lord Howell of Guildford, the president of the Royal Commonwealth Society, was positive that the Queen would understand it.

“I would think she [the Queen] fully understood the context,” Guildford was quoted by The Telegraph, as saying.

“[Harry’s] been very active and committed to Commonwealth activities. He’s a real champion of the Commonwealth and I think he was trying to explain to others outside Government… where we are going. I would have thought she understood it fully, frankly.”

However, veteran royal photographer Arthur Edwards had a different opinion. For him, Prince Harry’s statement was insulting to the Queen.
