Will Meghan Markle and Prince Harry cease to be known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex? One council has been forced to discuss the possibility.

The City Council of Brighton and Hove, a city in East Sussex, must discuss stripping the royals of their title during their October meeting after an e-petition received over 1,700 signatures from residents. The minimum amount of signatures needed to add a matter to the meeting's agenda is 1,250.

The Sun reported that the petition was initiated in July by Chris Ross, an obviously unhappy resident, and states that its purpose is to "establish a precedent that Brighton and Hove Council will no longer afford hospitality to those with royal or aristocratic titles nor make use of those titles in official documents as these titles are arbitrarily and unfairly acquired."

Although Ross successfully managed to get the matter added to the meeting, it's likely going to be a waste of time because, according to the British publication, the council doesn't have "the power" to actually strip the couple of their titles. They can, however, per Cornwall Live, choose to not refer to Meghan and Harry as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in official papers.

The Brighton and Hove City Council will discuss the matter on Oct. 24.
