Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are doomed and reduced to second-tier celebrities after quitting their royal roles.
On Wednesday evening, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex shocked the palace and the world when they announced that they are stepping back as senior members of the Firm. The couple have been subjected to constant media scrutiny all year long. In a documentary, they got candid and admitted their struggles as first time parents and working royals.
According to Dominic Green of Spectator, the Sussexes are doomed because “the only quick way out of a royal family is via the guillotine.” He also added that the royal couple are wrong to think that by leaving their royal roles they will escape the press intrusion and live a more meaningful life when they are already living it.
“Their lives are meaningful now because they are integral to the royal family’s rebranding for the 21st century,” Green wrote. “Any reduction in their royal-ness reduces them to second-tier celebrities, and any missteps in that crowded second-tier lead downwards to tabloid hell, which is as meaningless as life gets. And while it’s true that the press pursue Harry and Meghan because they’re glamorous young royals, the near-sacred status of royalty is precisely what protects them against unlimited press intrusion.”
Green pointed out that the couple couldn’t resign from a contract that they never signed. Prince Harry will remain a prince and Markle will be a duchess forever like Prince Andrew’s ex-wife Sarah Ferguson who still monetizes herself as the Duchess of York years after their divorce.
The Life & Arts editor also warned Prince Harry and Markle of exposing themselves to the world without the deference and protection accorded to full-time royals. Green wrote that the world will start to see Prince Harry and Markle for who they are and not what they symbolize.
“We will rapidly tire of their patronizing petulance, and only then will they finally attain the meaningful life they think they seek — as human sacrifices on the altar of celebrity,“ Green concluded.
Markle already returned to Canada and the duchess dropped a major clue that she’s no longer returning to the U.K. Meanwhile, Queen Elizabeth II was reportedly furious and disappointed at the Sussexes for not consulting the senior members of the royal family about their plans.
