Meghan Markle and Prince Harry may have been settling down quietly in the bustling city of Los Angeles but the couple apparently isn’t letting go of their former residence, the Frogmore Cottage, which will reportedly be their British base.

The Sussexes revealed in January that they will be stepping down from their senior royal roles and will be financially independent. Markle and Prince Harry also planned to repay the cost of the renovations of their Frogmore Cottage, which allegedly totaled $3.1 million, Harper’s Bazaar reported.

The whopping amount angered some British taxpayers, who shouldered the expenses because the fund came from the Sovereign Grant, the money given to Her Royal Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Only senior members of the royal family, including Markle and Prince Harry, get to benefit from this.

Of late, however, Markle and Prince Harry have been keeping true to their word, according to a source of the DailyMail. The Frogmore Cottage and its vicinity have been maintained by personnel from the nearby Windsor Castle.

“It has been quietly arranged for the couple to start paying rent on the property, beginning last month,” the outlet reported and added that they started with less than $22,000 as payment.

The deal was said to be a “rental-plus agreement,” wherein Markle and Prince Harry will pay more than the commercial rate to give more than the original cost. With the announcement made months ago, the outlet thought the Sussexes would be paying for the Frogmore Cottage renovations in one sum.

Last year, the 35-year-old and his then-expectant wife moved out of the Kensington Palace to head to the Frogmore Cottage, Town and Country Mag reported. The structure was reportedly a mess and in dire need of renovation, which may explain the high cost.

Sources claimed that there were a lot of major works done to the property, especially since it was then believed that it was where the couple’s baby will be raised. However, that plan is quashed, as per the recent decision of Markle and Prince Harry to move to Los Angeles.

The family of three has been staying at a spacious mansion owned by TV mogul Tyler Perry. The property, which reportedly is worth $18 million, is located in an exclusive neighborhood.
