Meghan Markle and Prince Harry continue to face backlash after they announced their decision to quit the royal family on Wednesday. Neither of the Sussex royals has revealed the primary reason behind their latest move up to this writing. While some think it is the best thing to do amid the never-ending criticisms they have been receiving, critics claimed that the most selfish act a member of the royal clan can do to Queen Elizabeth and their loved ones.
New York Post writer-editor Maureen Callahan lambasted Meghan and Prince Harry for their “confusing” statement. The journalist stated that the Sussex couple’s announcement is filled with euphemistic language that puzzled everyone, primarily Queen Elizabeth. She even cited BBC royal correspondent Jonny Dymond, who stated that the members of the royal clan did not understand what Meghan and Harry’s statement means.
“Can’t wait to hear what the Queen has to say about that. This is all so smug and gross, considering British taxpayers already spent $3 million on Harry and Meghan’s wedding,” Maureen wrote in her column. “The hypocrisy here is Harry and Meghan announcing a ‘step back’ rather than abdication. To employ a cliché: They are having their cake and eating it, too,” she went on.
Numerous media outlets, also, criticized Meghan Markle and Prince Harry for being discourteous to Queen Elizabeth and displaying no understanding of what their roles as Duke and Duchess of Sussex entailed. A source said, per ABS-CBN News, that the royal family was "hurt" and "disappointed" after learning about the couple’s decision to step back from their roles.
“There were talks over the Christmas break between the couple and the family, over the phone because the Sussexes were away, but they were very early stage talks, nothing had been agreed,” another royal insider revealed to Vanity Fair. “Some of what [Harry and Meghan] are proposing is very complicated and isn’t just something that can happen overnight,” the tipster went on.
Meanwhile, it remains unclear what Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are planning to do next after their bombshell exit. However, based on their statement, the Sussex couple will continue doing some royal duties as they start setting up a new charity and try to become financially independent.
The parents of Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor said they plan to balance their time between North America and the United Kingdom. Meghan and Harry are expected to base themselves at Frogmore Cottage when in the U.K. It not yet known, however, where the Sussex couple intent to reside when in North America.
