Meghan Markle, Prince Harry Will Not Choose Kate, William As Baby’s Godparents

Kate Middleton and Prince William are unlikely to be among the godparents of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will welcome their firstborn in a few months or weeks. Some suggest that Markle is due in February. However, it’s highly likely that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will not be godparents to their baby.

Prince William and Prince Harry are siblings and according to Cosmopolitan, “siblings (and presumably their significant others) simply are not godparent material!” Thus, just like Prince William, Middleton is unlikely to get the honor of being the godmother of Markle’s baby.

Prince William and Middleton also didn’t get Prince Harry as godfather to their three children: 5-year-old Prince George, 3-year-old Princess Charlotte and 8-month-old Prince Louis. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge preferred to have their close friends as their kids’ godparents.

Royal correspondent Robert Jobson has an explanation for this. According to the royal expert, Prince Harry is an immediate relative and he “will have a role in [the baby's] life anyway.”

Nonetheless, it’s still possible for Prince Harry and Markle to bend the protocol and choose Middleton and Prince William because family members are not totally off limits for the roles. Prince William and Middleton also chose distant relatives on their godparents' list including Prince William’s cousin Zara Tindall, Princess Diana’s niece Laura Fellowes and Middleton’s cousins Adam and Lucy Middleton.

There are rumors that Prince Harry and Markle will likely choose Jessica and Ben Mulroney. The Mulroneys have been very supportive of the couple since they first started dating.

According to Katie Nicholl, there was a time when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex kept their romance a secret from the public for six months. When their relationship was publicized, a story was leaked that Prince Harry canceled a flight to Toronto to make it look like he was in the U.K. However, Prince Harry and Markle were in Mulroney’s plush home at the time.

Many also believe that the couple will include Misha Nonoo on their godparents' list. Nonoo is the designer of Markle’s popular white button-down shirt that she wore on her first public outing with Prince Harry. There were also rumors that she was the couple’s matchmaker because her ex-husband Alexander Gilkes and Prince Harry went to school together.
