Meghan Markle is a proud African-American woman. But some netizens have used her biracial identity against her.

On the online forum site Quora, some royal fans wondered why Markle doesn’t look very much African-American. In fact, some of them said that her appearance is leaning more towards being of Indian descent.

Naina Sharma said that the Duchess of Sussex doesn’t look like an Indian but she is mistaken for one due to two reasons. Firstly, Prince Harry’s wife slathers on too much bronzer to remind everyone that she’s biracial. Second, Markle doesn’t seem too proud of her African heritage.

“Also, seems like she is not too proud of her African heritage when it doesn’t suit her. So, she straightens the life out of her hair. Hence, people who don’t know her assume she is an Indian woman rather than a half-African American woman because the hair is the distinguishing factor between a lot of dark-skinned Indians and people of African heritage,” she said.

Royal fan Dylan Lynch said that Markle doesn’t look like an Indian. Rather, she looks like a light-skinned mixed black woman. Lynch also recounted the time that the Duchess of Sussex revealed that her mom, Doria Ragland, was mistaken for her nanny, according to Andrew Morton in "Meghan: A Hollywood Princess."

“I don’t see why when she looks just like her mother only a shade or two lighter. But then as I’ve been saying Meghan is really eager to pass for white, so she’s convinced herself that everyone thinks her mother is the nanny,” he said.

Greta Sproul, a writer, editor, and musician, said that her mom is black, and she was also mistaken as Indian when she was younger.

“Some people just don’t equate ‘black’ with light skin and so they assume a light-skinned black person must be Indian. So now you know. The Duchess of Sussex does not really look Indian, she is just a light-skinned, mixed-race person,” she said.
