They have been pitted against each other in numerous ways in the tabloid media, from reports of an alleged rift to comparisons of their fashion. However, it’s now being stated that Meghan Markle and her sister-in-law Kate Middleton are definitely being given different treatment from both the press and the public.

On BBC’s Radio 5 Live, lifestyle writer Natalie Morris revealed that there is a contrast in how the two different Duchesses are being treated, noting that Markle, who married Prince Harry in May 2018, seems to be getting much more hate than Middleton ever has.

“It is disproportionate the kind of hate and vitriol we are seeing in the media and social media about her. It is really unsettling to kind of see that because it makes me question what the underlying motivations are behind this disproportionate anger that people feel,” she said. “What I think really shows it up is the contrast between the way that Kate is treated and how Meghan is treated.”

Fashion is an example that is often used to compare the two women, and Morris noted how there was a difference in how Middleton’s look at the BAFTAs this year, where she wore a white one-shoulder gown, was praised, while a similar look Markle sported with a black one-shoulder number during the British Fashion Awards in December was heavily criticized.

“The one example I will bring up is the fact that a number of people brought it up on social media today about the one-armed dress that Kate was wearing I think at the BAFTAs,” she said. “She looked stunning and all of the media coverage was incredibly positive and then you rewind a couple of months to when Meghan wore a black one-armed dress, and all of the coverage there was saying she was ‘breaking royal protocol’ for this outrageous one-armed dress that was completely inappropriate.”

“So when you hold the two of them next to each other you have to question, ‘why is there that difference there?’” she added.

While Morris couldn’t say why the differences were there, Markle has often faced criticism—even becoming the subject of a petition that stated she wasn’t good enough for Prince Harry shortly after her engagement was announced in 2017. In addition, while Middleton’s family has stayed out of headlines, Markle’s often seeks out the press, and a battle with her father, Thomas Markle Sr., and half-sister, Samantha Grant, has played out there.

Most recently, the drama included the release of a letter she wrote her father last summer about his decision to continue going to the press, something that reportedly upset the Queen.
