Meghan Markle used to crave for the gossip column coverage before he married Prince Harry.

According to Katie Hind, a showbiz editor for Mail on Sunday, Markle’s publicist once contacted her to feature the former actress on her column. However, she couldn’t grasp how at present the duchess is despising the British press, when she used to chase them. Hind was referring to Markle’s emotional interview where she shared her struggles under the media spotlight.

“It isn’t easy to reconcile the Meghan who appeared so at ease talking candidly with a tabloid journalist she had never previously met with the Duchess on our screens last weekend who spoke of her hatred for the British tabloids. Had contempt hidden behind the hugs on that rooftop bar six years ago? Did her smiles really mask a snarl of disgust?” Hind wrote. “Or is it that, as the Duchess of Sussex, she no longer needs the gossip column coverage that plain Meghan Markle once craved?“

Markle was largely unknown outside the U.S. before she married Prince Harry. In fact, Hind confessed that she never knew Markle despite her role in the American TV drama “Suits.” In 2013, Hind received a call from Markle’s U.K. publicist begging her to meet the actress for a red-top newspaper. Hind admitted that at the time, she reluctantly agreed even if she preferred to stay at home.

When they met, she found Markle “pretty but unremarkably so, until she flashed her transformative Hollywood smile.” She added that the duchess was softly spoken, kind and eager to chat. She felt Markle’s eagerness to make her a friend.

During their conversation, Markle even asked her about Ashley Cole whom Markle said followed her on Twitter and kept on trying to talk to her. However, she discouraged Markle from being with Cole as Hind was aware of his romance, marriage and divorce from singer Cheryl Tweedy. Hind felt that Markle was disappointed giving her an inkling that the former actress liked him or at least the idea of him.

After their meeting, Markle secured Hind’s coverage in a newspaper. At the time, Hind felt that she saved Markle from the fate of becoming Cole’s girlfriend. After a week, Markle was at it again, riding the publicity carousel in London.

Later there was a charity and Markle reportedly asked TV personality Lizzie Cundy if she knew a famous guy because she was single and really loved English men. Looking back at how Markle behaved and how she despised the British media recently, Hind was confused what Markle really wanted.
