Melania Trump celebrated her birthday April 26. But rather than throwing a party, the First Lady decided to use her energies to honor the people who are battling the coronavirus on the front lines. It was a noble gesture that shone above the ugly partisan attacks that have come to dominate Washington's political scene during the pandemic.

The coronavirus pandemic forced President Donald Trump to make the difficult decision of ordering a lockdown and asking people to follow social distancing rules. While the lockdown led to a economic challenges, it also emerged as an opportunity for ordinary Americans to come together in a way that has not been seen in the recent past. People are supporting each other, contributing to charities, and donating to food banks across the country.

The First Lady is leading by example in the fight against the coronavirus. To show her support for those on the front lines of the fight, Melania sent boxed lunches to the staff of a local supermarket.

The gesture inspired The White House Historical Association, a private non-profit educational organization founded in 1961 by the then First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, to deliver food to people who have been working during the lockdown.

Taking cue from what Melania did, The White House Historical Association decided to celebrate the First Lady’s birthday by providing meals to personnel of the District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department. The organization called the emergency responders “DC’s Bravest.”

Melania appreciated the gesture and thanked The White House Historical Association. “No better gift than one of giving back to the people on the front lines, who keep us safe every day,” she wrote in a Twitter post.

Just as people across the country had to miss out on celebrating special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries, Melania too had to settle for wishes on social media. The First Lady thanked everyone for their wishes and shared a special message for all those who had to celebrate their special occasions online like her.

“This year, my heart is with those who have missed their own celebrations of birthdays, holidays, & special occasions with their families, friends, & colleagues,” Melania Trump wrote. “I look forward to the day when we can all be together again!” she added.
