- Melania Trump's body language made it hard for her to be taken seriously
Melania Trump appeared in two coronavirus PSAs that she uploaded on her Twitter account. Days later, an expert analyzed the FLOTUS’s body language in the clips.
While speaking with Express, body language expert Judi James called the format of the first lady’s public service announcements as risky. She also said that it was hard to take them seriously because they resembled the clips of the Kardashian family.
“This [PSA video] would be a risky strategy in the UK, where posting a ‘We’re all in this together’ message in the immaculate and subtly sexy style of a Kardashian, to be watched by millions of the public sitting at home in joggers and dressing gowns while struggling with the concept of getting enough loo rolls and cutting our own hair, but Melania’s serene body language here suggests her scheme to motivate is based on showing that things are still very normal in the White House,” James said.
The body language expert also talked about Melania’s hairstyle and gestures in the clip which was reportedly lacking.
“Her hair is swept carefully over one shoulder in a style that would prohibit movement and not one of those hairs moves out of place as she speaks. There is no gesticulation, not even the illustrative ‘mime’ gestures that many would-be impelled to produce when instructing people to wash their hands. Instead, there is a small, constant undulation that affects her entire body as she speaks and this, with her occasional eye-narrowing, emphasizes her immaculate beauty and a state of calm rather than panic,” James said.
On a more positive note, the body language expert said that Melania’s body language was reassuring because it promotes the idea of stability and continuity. But since she did not make use of non-verbal empathy in her PSAs, her message that “we’re all in this together” sounded incongruent.
Some netizens also shared the same thoughts with James by saying that the FLOTUS’s PSA didn’t sound sincere.
“You provided no real information,” Twitter user @PauletteParis1 said.
“The best thing you can do for this country is to shut up. Your hubby is causing death & destruction & you are not helping. America needs PPE's, respirators, ICU beds, isolation wards and will need larger morgues, financial support & jobs. They don't need platitudes from you,” Twitter user @longviewsky said.
