Melania Trump Defended On Twitter After Her Accent During RNC Speech Slammed By Bette Midler
Melania Trump was the keynote speaker on night two of the Republican National Convention, speaking about her husband’s presidency from the White House Rose Garden to a group of people and the rest of the nation. However, her actual speech isn’t the only thing getting attention, as comments made about her on social media by Bette Midler and Kathy Griffin come under fire.
Shortly after the First Lady took to the stage to deliver her address, Midler took to Twitter to criticize her accent, even referring to Trump as an illegal alien.
#beBest is back! A UGE bore! She can speak several words in a few languages. Get that illegal alien off the stage!
— bettemidler (@BetteMidler) August 26, 2020
Oh, God. She still can’t speak English.
— bettemidler (@BetteMidler) August 26, 2020
Naturally, reaction to her comments was swift, and many slammed the actress and singer for her comments, calling her xenophobic and wondering if that was the example of tolerance for others that Democrats claimed Republicans didn’t have.
Are you actually mocking an immigrant who became the First Lady of the United States for her accent?
— Mary Margaret Olohan (@MaryMargOlohan) August 26, 2020
Who knew xenophobia was the wind beneath your wings! https://t.co/wh1UMJd5Og

Bette Midler referred to Melania Trump as an illegal immigrant during her speech last night & even had the nerve to criticize her English (she speaks five languages, Bette).
— Lauren Boebert (@laurenboebert) August 26, 2020
Is this the tolerance and love that the Democrat Party refers to?#RNC2020
Others also criticized Midler for the comments because Trump is multilingual, and it has been said she can speak five languages.
How many languages do you speak, Bette? Melania: Slovenian, English, French, Italian, and German.
— Ross Kaminsky (@Rossputin) August 26, 2020
Whatever Melania Trump’s shortcomings may be, her linguistic ability is not one of them.
— Natasha Fatah (@NatashaFatah) August 26, 2020
Alongside her native Slovenian, she speaks English, French, Italian and German.
Also mocking an immigrant’s accent? 👎🏽 https://t.co/Vu1amHhPBS
Midler isn’t the only one who came under fire for her comments, as Kathy Griffin, who previously landed in hot water for a photo where she was holding a severed head designed to look like the President, also faced criticism for a comment she appeared to make about Melania.
lots of hate kathy. maybe have a glass of red wine and chill with the cat?
— Anti-Communist Ashman ______ (@danny_ashman) August 26, 2020
Yes, she’s intelligent and beautiful. Don’t you wish you were too?
— DocKobb (@DocDiarmid) August 26, 2020
Griffin also took to Twitter during Tiffany Trump’s speech, poking fun at how Donald Trump’s daughter with second wife Marla Maples has rarely been seen with her family over the years.
“I’m Tiffany Trump and I’ve loved my dad Donald J Trump ever since I met him in 2015”
— Kathy Griffin (@kathygriffin) August 26, 2020
The speeches by the President’s wife and daughter aren’t the only ones that have received major criticism online since the RNC began on Monday night. That night’s speakers, which included his son, Donald Trump Jr and his girlfriend, Kimberly Guilfoyle, have also faced critiques for things they said and the way they said them.
Guilfoyle, in particular, faced criticism for comments about her being a first-generation American, which she was called out on because the comment was false.
Kimberly Guilfoyle is a first generation American??? Her people are from Aguadilla, PR. So is my grandfather. Puerto Ricans are American - last I checked. I’m horrified. And embarrassed as a fellow Latina. Shameful. #GOPConvention2020

She also faced comparisons to the fictional “Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers” character Rita Repulsa as well, with people, including Midler, also stating they couldn’t wait to see comedian Cecily Strong take on the role as Guilfoyle in upcoming seasons of “Saturday Night Live.”
The Republican National Convention continues Wednesday night.
