Melania Trump Reportedly Differs From Michelle Obama In Key Way; FLOTUS Not At Fault
KEY POINTS
- Melania Trump and Michelle Obama are very different
- Melania Trump and Michelle Obama dress differently
- The FLOTUS doesn't like wearing American designers like Barack Obama's wife
Melania Trump has been showing a preference for international designers over American ones ever since she became the first lady of the United States.
In the book “Free, Melania,” author Kate Bennett saw this as another opportunity to compare the FLOTUS with Michelle Obama. The latter was known for wearing American-designed clothing while she was serving as the first lady.
On the contrary, there have only been very instances wherein Melania was photographed wearing a creation made by an American designer. She was once photographed wearing a blue dress designed by Ralph Lauren.
“ Traditionally, first ladies will showcase American designers as much as they can, especially on trips abroad. Michelle Obama was particularly good at selecting designers who were American but had origin in or connection to the country she was visiting,” Bennett said.
According to the author, one of the reasons why the FLOTUS doesn’t like wearing American-designed clothes is because she doesn’t have any care for the rules. And if this feels inauthentic for her, she will most likely not even try.
But according to Political Flare, Donald Trump’s wife cannot be blamed entirely for her dislike or lack of support for American designers. After all, some designers who do not support the POTUS have decided to not also dress his wife.
Carl Sferrazza Anthony, a historian at the National First Ladies Library, said that some American designers have gone as far as saying that they wouldn’t provide clothes for the FLOTUS even if she asked.
“Those fashion designers were making a very public political statement,” he said.
Wearing an American-designed attire from a brand that doesn’t support the president could generate negative publicity. For instance, Ralph Lauren faced backlash after Melania was photographed in one of their pieces. On Twitter, the hashtag #BoycottRalphLauren became trending.
Meanwhile, the preference for American designers isn’t the only thing that Melania and Michelle differ from. Their parenting techniques are reportedly very different from each other as well.
Michelle raised Malia and Sasha in such a way that they make their own beds and do their own laundry. Melania, on the other hand, doesn’t question a lot of Barron Trump’s desires and decisions.
