- Florida has seen a weekly uptick of COVID-19 cases since October
First lady Melania Trump visited a voting site in Palm Beach, Florida, on Tuesday to cast her ballot. She was a wearing a $22,000 outfit, but no mask.
The voting site at the Morton and Barbara Mandel Recreation Center was surrounded by heavy security as the 50-year-old first lady walked in barefaced, despite a mask mandate in the county.
Trump told journalists why she chose to vote in-person at the polling site located two miles north of Mar-a-Lago.
“It’s Election Day, so I wanted to come here to vote today on the election day,” the first lady said.
Melania Trump wore a bold equestrian-print white summer dress, believed to be from high-fashion label Gucci, with a price tag of $4,500. She paired her outfit with an oversized Hermes Kelly bag worth $16,900 and a pair of Christian Louboutin heels costing $640, according to a report by Daily Express.
Trump, who was diagnosed with the novel coronavirus last month, smiled and waved at reporters while surrounded by Secret Service agents and aides. The first lady was the only person not wearing a face covering when she entered to cast her vote, The New York Times reported.
Stephanie Grisham, the first lady’s spokesperson, said Trump was the only person present at the site at the time she cast her vote, excluding staff members and poll workers who were tested for the coronavirus. Grisham also said that no one was near Trump while she cast her ballot.
Secret Service agents had cleared other voters out of the site prior to the first lady's visit. But a few of her supporters waited outside holding, holding signs that read, “We love Melania.”
Melania’s visit came as the rate of new coronavirus cases in Florida has seen a weekly uptick since early October. The state is currently in the red zone for new COVID-19 infections per 100,000 people. It has remained in the yellow zone for coronavirus positivity rate, which rests between 5% and 8%, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
“Florida should immediately expand mitigation in the counties with rising cases and an increase in daily hospitalizations,” an Oct. 25 report from Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office read.
“These, taken with the continued increase in percent of long-term care facilities with a positive staff member, suggest the early signals of expanding community spread that should be immediately addressed,” the statement continued.
