Former Attorney General William Barr has revealed in his new book that ex-First Lady Melania Trump was smarter than her husband, noting that she was the only reason why he got a job under the Trump administration.
In his latest book “One Damn Thing After Another: Memoirs of an Attorney General,” Barr recalled meeting with former President Donald Trump following his confirmation where the latter revealed that Melania endorsed him for the position.
“You know what saved you?” Trump asked Barr, according to the book. “We were watching the hearing together, and when I got angry, she said, ‘Are you crazy? Look at him. Right out of central casting. He looks and acts like an Attorney General! Leave him alone — he is carrying himself just right, and he will be confirmed, which is what you need.’”
Barr then wrote that he always thought Melania was smarter than her husband.
Prior to his confirmation, Barr said Trump considered withdrawing his nomination for attorney general because the former president was furious that he did not interfere in ex-special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of the Trump campaign.
The former attorney general was once one of Trump’s most loyal allies. However, their relationship soured in the weeks following the 2020 presidential election. Barr wrote he was summoned by Trump in early December where they argued about the then-president’s unfounded claims of widespread fraud.
During that conversation, Barr said Trump got “madder and madder” when he challenged the false allegations about the election. The former attorney general later threatened to resign from his position before two of Trump’s government lawyers stopped him.
Barr said he reluctantly stayed after the heated discussion. However, the former attorney general said he knew their relationship had deteriorated at that point. His resignation was made official in December 2020. Barr and Trump have not spoken since.
In his memoir, Barr urged the Republican Party to move on from having Trump as the leader, writing that he has “shown he has neither the temperament nor persuasive powers to provide the kind of positive leadership that is needed.”
However, Barr said he will still vote for Trump if he is selected as the GOP’s presidential nominee in 2024 despite his denouncement.
