Mercedes S65 AMG Coupe Twin Turbocharged V-12 Will Replace CL65 As German Automaker’s Showcase Hi-Tech Luxury Car [PHOTOS]
More than a year after Mercedes-Benz redesignated the S-Class coupe after a 15-year hiatus, the German luxury automaker said on Monday that it’s introducing a 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V-12 version of the coupe to its flagship lineup.
Due out at the end of the year for around $220,000, the upcoming S65 AMG Coupe is the latest move by Mercedes to phase out the CL-Class and bring the coupe back into the 42-year-old S fold. The CL was spun off as its own coupe category in the 1990s.
"There are AMG fans for whom our V-12 engine is the measure of all things," Tobias Moers, chief executive of Mercedes’ AMG performance division, said in a statement announcing the new car.
The S65 will have the same 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque as the CL65 it replaces, but it will be loaded with more high-tech features, including automatically adjusted air suspension to handle cornering more effectively and a bevy of driving aids, including lane assist and autonomous collision braking.
A lithium-ion battery will replace the conventional starter and backup batteries, saving 44 pounds. The S65 comes with carbon ceramic brakes, which are about 20 percent lighter than previous brakes. It will hit 0-60 in four seconds, slightly faster than the CL65.
