Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts Officially Play Mother and Daughter in New Film
After months of rumors, the Weinstein Co. has confirmed that Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts will be starring as mother and daughter in the film August: Osage County.
The film is based on a Tony-Award winning play that follows the women of a family who for years have been living separate lives until they are brought together by the death of a family patriarch.
Streep will play a pill-popping matriarch, while Roberts will play her daughter, according to a statement from Weinstein.
Rumors of the film's cast have been circulating since October. According to the Weinstein Co. it has taken time to figure out the logistics and schedules of the highly anticipated adaptation.
Streep has recently been in the spotlight in award ceremonies, sweeping titles for best actress in her role as the Iron Lady, Margaret Thatcher. After winning a Golden Globe and BAFTA, she is among the nominees for best actress in the Academy Awards coming up this month.
After seeing Meryl Streep's mesmerizing portrayal as Margaret Thatcher in 'The Iron Lady,' it has me even more excited and proud to co-star with her, Roberts said in a statement, the Hollywood Reporter reported.
Meanwhile, Roberts recently attracted attention after a photograph was leaked of her playing the evil queen in Mirror, Mirror, a comedy adaptation of Snow White. Roberts is featured wearing a billowing yellow dress, with white sleeves and a large white ruff detail.
