Konami has released a surprise update for “Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain” that will allow gamers to play as Quiet. The update also adds new features to its online multiplayer mode, FOB (Forward Operating Base) Missions.

“You can play as Quiet to infiltrate FOBs. You cannot change her uniform or head options. She is an expert with a sniper rifle, and her steady hands let her take her shots with minimal shaking,” Konami said on its website. “Quiet’s movement speed is extremely fast and allows for unique jumping abilities over high steps where a player would usually need a ladder. She can close in on enemies quickly with her special dash, while remaining still for a certain amount of time will make her stealthy.”

FOB Missions, to the uninitiated, refer to an online multiplayer competitive mode that requires players to build and defend their own bases. Players will be able to invade the bases of other players online and they will have to defend them by establishing a security team to guard their FOB.

The update to “Metal Gear Solid 5” is a big surprise considering that it’s nearly been a year since Konami provided a software update to the game, as pointed out by Eurogamer. The 1.7 update is now available for PC, PlayStation 4 and the Xbox one, and it also adds other new features to FOB aside from making Quiet a playable character.

Konami has added new difficulty levels for Event FOB Missions. In hard mode, players will be able to invade other bases without the risk of any retaliation from other players. This provides users with the opportunity to steal materials and abduct staff without worrying about revenge from a defending player.

Konami has also added a couple of new sniper rifles in FOB Missions, as well as a couple of new Dark Matter generator weapons. There’s also a new Energy Wall item that can be used to generate a protective shield, which can temporarily defend players from taking damage. The Energy Wall shield will slowly disappear if it continues to take a certain amount of damage. Konami also said that it has fixed some minor issues with the 1.7 update.

The last time Konami updated “The Phantom Pain” was in August 2017, when the company added Ocelot as a playable character in FOB Missions and added swimsuits for FOB staff.
