The New York Mets are working toward becoming contenders in the 2019 MLB season. After acquiring Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz from the Seattle Mariners, the organization might just be getting started.

“We did not make this move to make this our last move,” general manager Brodie Van Wagenen said at a press conference Tuesday.

It’d be stunning to see the Mets sign one of the top free agents, though that would certainly be a way to turn them into one of the National League’s best teams. The New York Post’s Mike Puma reported last week that Van Wagenen has interest in signing Bryce Harper, but few believe New York will meet the outfielder’s contract demands.

Still, there are a few quality players that the Mets have shown interest in adding.

New York has reportedly had discussions with the Miami Marlins about making a trade for catcher J.T. Realmuto. The Marlins seem likely to deal the All-Star, and the Mets only got a .208 batting average from their catchers last season.

A.J. Pollock isn’t on the same level as Harper, but signing the outfielder could fill another hole. Van Wagenen has said Pollock would be a good fit with the team. The Mets are looking to replace Yoenis Cespedes, who could miss most of next season with a heel injury.

Before the Mets made the trade with the Mariners, there were rumors that the team was exploring deals that would send Noah Syndergaard elsewhere. Now that the team is adding pieces to make a playoff run, New York might be more likely to add to the rotation.

The Mets have had discussions with the Cleveland Indians about a possible trade for Corey Kluber, according to multiple reports. Cleveland has spoken with several teams about their top starting pitchers. It’s expected that either Kluber, Trevor Bauer or Carlos Carrasco will be moved this offseason.

New York went 77-85 last season, missing the playoffs for the second straight year. The team ranked 12th among the 15 NL teams in runs scored and 10th in ERA.
