Met's star drops out of Japan tour, fear of radiation
Metropolitan Opera star, Anna Netrebko, has dropped out of the Met's Japan tour due to concerns over her health and safety.
Netrebko joined tenor's Joseph Calleja and Jonas Kaufmann, who also pulled out over health and safety concerns centering on the March 11 earthquake.
The Met brought in a radiation expert from Columbia University Medical Center who discussed anxieties with the company members prior to departing for Japan. However, when it came time for the opera star to prepare for travel, she could not go through with it.
It was only last week that Netrebko and Calleja made it known that they would not be joining the rest of the company in Japan.
The Met issued a statement, which said, Ms. Netrebko changed her mind because of the emotional weight of having also lived through the tragedy of Chernobyl, and Mr. Calleja also had last-minute misgivings.
In replacement of Netrebko, Barbara Frittoli will take the role of Mimi in La Bohème.'
The three week tour takes place from May 30 - June 19.
