Is This The Mets' Year? A Look At New York's World Series Betting Odds After 18 Games
With just north of 10% of the 2022 MLB season complete, the New York Mets have exceeded very high expectations. Those expectations are even higher now that the Mets have more wins than any team in baseball.
The Mets’ World Series odds have been cut in half in just a matter of a few weeks. Entering Opening Day with +1500 odds to win this year’s championship, New York’s World Series odds are down to +750 at FanDuel Sportsbook.
Only the Los Angeles Dodgers are given a better chance to win the Fall Classic than the Mets. The Dodgers’ have been the clear MLB favorites since Opening Day. Los Angeles’ World Series odds have improved nominally from +470 to +460.
A 12-4 record puts the Dodgers percentage points ahead of the Mets for MLB’s best record. At 13-5, New York has a better record than any AL team and owns a 4.5-game first-place lead in the NL East.
On Monday, the Mets became the fastest team to 13 wins with a 5-2 road victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Down to their final out, New York scored all five runs in the ninth inning to come back against the team that sits atop the NL Central.
Max Scherzer’s seven scoreless innings kept the Mets in the game until their bats finally came alive. Scherzer leads a rotation that ranks second in MLB with a 2.29 ERA and has been the catalyst for New York’s hot start.
Scherzer is third in the league with 25.0 innings pitched and first with 33 strikeouts. Carlos Carrasco has a 1.47 ERA. David Peterson has surrendered one run in three starts. Chris Bassitt’s 3.00 ERA is the worst of any Mets starter.
New York has done all of this without Jacob deGrom, who is arguably the league's best pitcher when healthy. It’s still unclear when the two-time NL Cy Young winner can start throwing again as he recovers from a shoulder injury.
The Mets are seventh in runs per game. Francisco Lindor has four home runs and a .917 OPS, reminding the organization why it gave the shortstop a 10-year, $341 million contract. Pete Alonso’s 16 RBI are good for fourth in the majors. Jeff McNeil and Mark Canha are both hitting above .315.
Meanwhile, the Mets are the best team in the Big Apple. The New York Yankees have a 10-6 record with +1000 odds in the early going.
