The U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) is set to face off against arch-rivals Mexico in their World Cup qualifier fixture Thursday.

With just three of 14 matches left to play in The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) category, USMNT are into their final stage of 2022 World Cup Qualifiers. USMNT are currently placed second in the table and with 21 points, the Americans are in level with Mexico.

The top three teams will qualify automatically for the upcoming World Cup, which will take place in Qatar. While the fourth-place team will participate in an intercontinental playoff against the winner of Oceania’s qualifying tournament.

Gregg Berhalter-managed USMNT can avoid heading into the playoffs by clinching four points in their next two games as that would ensure that Panama can't jump into the top three.

Following their trip to the renowned Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, the American side is due to take on Panama and Costa Rica on March 27 and March 30 respectively in the underway international break. While the fixture against Panama is a home game for USMNT, the match against Costa Rica is an away match.

For the crucial match against Mexico, USMNT will be without Weston McKennie, Brenden Aaronson, Matt Turner and Sergino Dest as the team was hit by multiple recent injuries.

Meanwhile, history is not on U.S.’ side as they have never won a World Cup Qualifier fixture at Estadio Azteca, a stadium that provides a strong home-field advantage, situated 7,200 feet above sea level and filled with a rasping crowd.

However, their recent meetings have seen the American side coming on top. USMNT have won three straight matches against their arch-rival, finals in the Concacaf Nations League and Gold Cup, as well as 2-0 home leg in qualifying, according to MLS Soccer.
