Michigan Courthouse Shooting Update: Deadly Shooting At Berrien County Courthouse

UPDATE: 4:20 p.m. EDT — Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey confirmed that three people died in a shooting Monday at the Berrien County Courthouse in St. Joseph, Michigan. "I stand here with a heavy heart," he said, via WSJV-TV in South Bend, Indiana.
Two court bailiffs died in the shooting, as did the gunman who shot them, Bailey said. A reporter at WBND‑LD in South Bend, Indiana, tweeted that others were hospitalized but in stable condition.

It has been reported that a man was being to taken to jail Monday when he took a gun from a deputy and opened fire. Bailey said the shooting happened at 2:25 p.m. local time after a disturbance on the floor of the courthouse.
Chris Gautz, a spokesman for the Michigan Department of Corrections, which operates a probation office in the courthouse, told the Washington Post that one of the office's employees saw the gunman during the incident.
"We had a probation officer in the courtroom when it happened, and the gunman ran right past him and the rest of the folks," Gautz told the paper. He said that the probation office's staff was safe and accounted for.

UPDATE: 4:10 p.m. EDT — A Michigan courthouse that was the scene of a deadly shooting remained under lockdown Monday, an employee at the county prosecutor's office told TV station WZZM in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The employee at the Berrien County Courthouse in St. Joseph, Michigan said three people were killed in the incident, two of whom were court bailiffs. The shooter also was killed.
Police have not yet confirmed the number of people who were killed or the status of the shooter.

UPDATE: 3:55 p.m. EDT — Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder posted to Twitter that the scene of a courthouse shooting in St. Joseph, Michigan was secured. Michigan State Police had started an investigation, Snyder tweeted.
