Michigan Kindergartner Serves Up Tequila To Classmates At Snack Time
A class of Michigan kindergarteners accidentally drank tequila at snack time after a student brought the bottle of booze in her backpack from home.
The ready-to-drink Jose Cuervo margaritas was brought in by a student late last week to the Grand River Academy Livonia school, where several students drank from the bottle after it was poured into cups, WJBK, a Fox affiliate out of Southfield, Michigan, reported.
The tequila had a 10% alcohol content, according to WMTV, an NBC affiliate out of Madison, Wisconsin.
Parents were outraged when they found out about the incident.
One parent, Dominique Zanders, told WJBK that several students drank the tequila. One kindergartener “felt woozy” and a “little dizzy” after four or five sips of the booze.
The kindergarteners thought the margaritas were juice, but the one who snuck it from home knew it was alcohol, according to the news outlet.
“The girl poured it in her cup and she drank it and the girl ended up telling her what it is, and she went and told the teacher there is liquor in this cup, and the teacher gave her a funny face,” Zanders said.
Grand River Academy Livonia released a statement obtained by WJBK, saying, “While we try to keep an eye on everything our students bring to school, that's simply not possible. It's unfortunate that these types of adult beverages can be easily mistaken for child-friendly drinks.”
The school did call poison control after learning that the students had been drinking alcohol and parents were notified immediately of the incident.
Parents are blaming the parents of the child that brought the tequila into the classroom.
“If your child knows what it is, nothing wrong with it. But they should know not to touch it,” Alexis Smith, another parent whose child drank the margaritas, told WJBK. “That it's not for kids.”
