Michigan School Bus Driver Gets Into Physical Altercation With 12-Year-Old Student, Video Shows
A Michigan school bus driver has been suspended after a video of her fighting a 12-year-old student went viral on Twitter.
The video surfaced on the social media platform Thursday, and was reportedly recorded Tuesday.
The 26-seconds-long clip shows the minor pummeling the unidentified bus driver, who is seen grabbing her by the shoulder and trying to fend off the punches. The shaky video, seemingly recorded on a cell phone camera, shows other students onboard the bus doing nothing to break up the fight and maintain a distance as the duo falls onto a bus seat at some point during the altercation.
The description of the post said: "Detroit school bus driver suspended after fight with a student."
The video might be disturbing to some viewers.
The Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) confirmed the video was recorded Tuesday on one of their buses, CBS News reported.
The DPSCD said the bus was contracted by Trinity Transportation and the involved driver faced termination.
"A fight occurred yesterday on a contracted Trinity bus involving a student and the driver," the district said in a statement. "The driver was removed from DPSCD service and may face termination through the bus contractor, Trinity. The incident is also under police investigation by the DPSCD Police Department."
The child's mother told ClickonDetroit the school didn't contact them after the incident and that she learned about the fight from her children.
"All those kids are traumatized by the behavior of one person that did not know how to cope," said her attorney Lillian Diallo.
Diallo said the 7th grader told her the bus driver also bit her in the face during the fight, and even tried to choke her to death.
"She started to hit me in my face, and she bit my face, and she would not stop," Diallo said the seventh-grader told her. "She tried to choke me to death as my brother is outside and parents, adults, and children are trying to get on the bus."
The 12-year-old said she was standing at the window waving at her brother when the bus driver asked her to sit down using profanity.
"I asked her who she was talking to," Diallo said the seventh-grader told her. That question allegedly infuriated the bus driver and he swung at her.
According to the outlet, the cameras on the bus weren't functioning at the time.
The video has so far garnered 22,000 views on social media and users were divided in their opinions. While some sided with the bus driver, others expressed concerns for the child.
"The student was outta school line," one user wrote. "I didn't see (the driver) swing. I just saw her trying to stop (herself) from being hit. She couldn't be punished because of that wild child (whose) parents are clearly not teaching their child to respect adults," added another.
"Hated to hear how scared that kid was on the bus and as a kid I would have been too because you see the driver fighting a kid," wrote a person. "Sure the 'they hit me first' will hold up in court," wrote another.
