KEY POINTS

  • Hand sanitizers with Mickey Mouse and The Mandalorian designs are being recalled
  • One of them may have benzene, while the other may have methanol
  • Benzene is considered a human carcinogen, and methanol is a toxic alcohol

Hand sanitizers with Disney designs are being recalled after testing by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) discovered the presence of potentially harmful chemicals. The affected Mickey Mouse product contained the toxic alcohol methanol, while The Mandalorian product contained the carcinogen benzene.

Best Brands Consumer Products promptly initiated an investigation after the FDA notified it of the results of the testing in February 2022, the company announcement posted on the FDA website noted. It found that the affected products were produced back in April and May of 2020 but were removed from sale by April 2021 "for unrelated commercial reasons."

Benzene is considered a human carcinogen that works by making the cells "not work correctly" or by damaging the immune system, thereby causing the loss of white blood cells, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explained. Substantial exposure to it may lead to cancers such as leukemia and other potentially life-threatening blood disorders.

On the other hand, methanol is a toxic alcohol that can be absorbed by the body through inhalation, ingestion, skin contact or eye contact. Substantial exposure to it may lead to symptoms such as vomiting, blurred vision, seizures, blindness or damage to the central nervous system and may even lead to death.

According to the company, although everyone who uses the product may be at risk, young children who accidentally drink the product, as well as those who drink such products as an alternative to alcohol, are particularly at risk for methanol poisoning. As the CDC explained, ingestion is an "important route of exposure" for methanol.

So far, the company has not received reports of adverse events related to the recalled products. However, customers who may have purchased these sanitizers are being advised to stop using them. Instead, the products should be properly disposed of.

The products affected by the recall are the Mickey Mouse Hand Sanitizer, Ethyl Alcohol 68%, in 2.11 fl. oz bottle and The Mandalorian Hand Sanitizer, Ethyl Alcohol 68 % in 2.11 fl. oz bottle.

The recalled Mickey Mouse hand sanitizers have the Lot # 20D21, expiry of 6/30/2022 and NDC 74530-013-02. They came in blue formulations. On the other hand, affected The Mandalorian hand sanitizers had Lot # 20E21, the expiry date of 9/30/2022 and NDC 74530-012-02. They came in blue as well as green formulations.

These products were sold nationwide but were not distributed further after they were removed from sale, the company noted.
