Midterm Election Polls: Democrats Moving Up Ahead Of Tuesday's Vote?
The margins between Democrats and Republicans are tightening with Election Day on Tuesday, according to an NBC News poll released Sunday.
Congressional preference is tied among all registered voters at 47%-47%, the poll showed.
Democrats hold a single-point lead with likely voters. Forty-eight percent of likely voters prefer a Democrat-controlled Congress while 47% prefer a Republican-controlled Congress.
Election enthusiasm among Democrats has increased in the past month. Seventy-three percent of both Democrats and Republicans express high interest in the election. In an earlier October poll from NBC News, Democratic interest lagged behind Republicans at 69% while GOP interest held at 78%. Seventy percent of all registered voters cited high interest in the midterm elections, responding with a 9 or 10 on a 10-point scale.
While Democrats show slight gains in certain polls, voters' thoughts on the state of the country and Biden's job approval are still important factors to consider as Election Day grows near.
The poll showed that Biden's approval rating among registered voters currently stands at 44% with a 53% disapproval rating, a decrease in approval by one point from an earlier October poll. Biden's approval rating is slightly lower than Donald Trump's (46%) and Barack Obama's (45%) ratings prior to the first midterm election during their term.
Biden's job approval ratings spread across different demographics show high approval among Black voters (78%), Latinos (52%), urban voters (50%), and women (48%). Contrastingly, Biden has low approval among suburban voters (43%), men (38%), white voters (37%), rural voters (29%), and independent voters (28%).
In terms of the direction of the country, many voters are dissatisfied. Almost three-fourths (72%) of voters believe the U.S. is headed in the wrong direction. Half of voters are very dissatisfied with the U.S. economy and 31% are "somewhat" dissatisfied. Nineteen percent are very (3%) or somewhat (16%) satisfied with the state of the economy. Nearly half (47%) of all voters say they want a "great deal" of change in direction from the way in which Biden has been leading the country.
When asked what the nation's most important issues are, voters gave answers that were similar to NBC's prior polls. Almost a quarter (23%) of voters said that the nation's most important issue is "threats to democracy," 20% said jobs and the economy, and 17% responded with the cost of living.
Thirty-eight percent of all voters have already cast their ballots with 19% voting by mail and 19% voting early in person. Thirteen percent say they will vote early and 45% of voters say they will cast their ballot on election day.
The NBC News poll was conducted from Nov. 3-5 on 1,000 registered voters with 804 participants reached by cellphone. The poll has a 3.1% margin of error.
