Migrant Worker Dies In Qatar After Suffering Stadium Fall, Adding To Growing List Of Deaths

A security guard who fell from the eighth floor of the World Cup's Lusail Stadium in Qatar has died, tournament organizers said Wednesday.

John Njau Kibue suffered the accident on Dec. 10 and was immediately attended to by emergency medical services, according to a statement from the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy.

He was later transferred to Hamad General Medical Hospital's intensive care unit, where a CNN report indicated he was treated for head and pelvic injuries. Kibue was a 24-year-old from Kenya, working in Qatar to support his family.

"We regret to announce that, despite the efforts of the medical team, he sadly passed away in hospital on Tuesday 13 December after being in the intensive care unit for three days," the organizer's statement said.

"His next of kin have been informed. We send our sincere condolences to his family, colleagues, and friends during this difficult time."

Kibue's fall is being investigated by tournament organizers "as a matter of urgency" and they say details will be released upon its conclusion.

There was no match taking place at Lusail when Kibue's accident occurred.

Kibue is the second migrant worker to die in Qatar since the World Cup began. Another worker was reportedly killed in an accident during the group stages. The SC has confirmed an investigation into the death, The Guardian reports.
