KEY POINTS

  • Mike Tyson's $10 million prize money will be donated to charities
  • Roy Jones Jr. could earn roughly $3 million
  • Tyson vs. Jones is categorized as an exhibition

Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. are all set for their much-awaited clash this Saturday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

For their troubles, Tyson is set to make around $10 million. Meanwhile, Jones will get around $3 million and is guaranteed at least $1 million for the fight.

With so much money on the table, it will be interesting if Tyson will hold to his word of donating the whole amount to charity. The former world boxing champion vowed to do so last July in a report from TMZ.

“It’s going to be for various charities, so nobody’s gonna have to worry about me getting rich or being jealous and saying I’m doing this for money,” Tyson said. “I’m not getting anything and I just feel good doing this because I can.”

It will be an interesting and different kind of fight. Though both Tyson and Jones are taking it seriously, the showdown has not been branded as a competitive fight. It has been deemed an exhibition, meaning there will be no judges and the fight can be stopped at any point if necessary.

As mentioned in a previous post, the Tyson vs. Jones fight is considered purely for entertainment. Guest celebrity judges will be tasked remotely to score the fight.

However, there will be no cumulative scores and no winner will be announced, according to California State Athletic Commission executive Andy Foster.

“I want the public to know what this is because I don’t want people to be disappointed. As long as they know this is an exhibition, I’m fine for everybody to earn,” Foster said.

The bout is set for eight rounds with both Tyson and Jones wearing no headgear and using 12-ounce gloves. If one of the boxers suffers a bad cut, the referee will be compelled to call a halt to the action.

Despite these odd conditions, Tyson will be a man to watch out for. He has shown impressive footage of his training in the past months.

Tyson is favored to win over Jones although the latter cannot be taken for granted. The highly-publicized encounter can be seen on TysonOnThriller.com or via paid subscription on FITE TV at 10:00 p.m. E.T. There will be four main card matches and three preliminaries.
