KEY POINTS

  • Colorado will send out checks of up to $1,500 to residents by Sept. 30
  • Hawaii residents will receive between $100 and $300 checks this month
  • Illinois residents will receive up to $100 in tax rebate beginning this week

Millions of Americans across the United States are set to receive stimulus checks this month as part of their local government's programs aimed at helping residents combat the ongoing inflation.

Several local governments have passed a new legislation that includes provisions to send out more relief checks to residents in lieu of a federal stimulus payment program. At least five states are sending out payments this month.

Colorado

In Colorado, residents who filed their 2021 tax returns by June 30 will receive a physical check amounting to $750 by Sept. 30. Couples filing their taxes jointly will also receive one-time payments of $1,500 as part of the Colorado Cash Back program.

Residents who failed to file their taxes by the deadline may still do so until Oct. 17. They will also be eligible to receive the payments, which will be sent out by Jan. 31, 2023.

Hawaii

Single tax filers in Hawaii who made under $100,000 in 2021 and couples filing jointly who earned $200,000 will receive a tax rebate of $300 this month. Meanwhile, individuals who earned more than $100,000 and couples filing jointly who made over $200,000 in 2021 will receive one-time payments of $100.

The program, called the Act 115 Refund, will also give dependents $300 in relief checks. This means a family of four could receive up to $1,200.

The government of Hawaii began issuing direct deposits on Sept. 9. Physical checks are not expected to go out until late October.

Illinois

In Illinois, single tax filers who earned less than $200,000 in 2021 will receive $50 in income tax rebates. The local government would send out $100 checks to couples filing jointly who made under $400,000. In addition to the tax rebates, filers can also earn $100 per dependent claimed on their 2021 tax returns, up to a maximum of three dependents.

The checks will be distributed in the week of Sept. 12, with all checks sent out roughly eight weeks later.

Massachusetts

In early August, Massachusetts lawmakers scrapped a bill that would have sent out $250 in stimulus checks to residents. Despite that, taxpayers are still likely to get money in excess tax revenue from the state. Gov. Charlie Baker, R-Mass., estimated that residents would get 7% of their 2021 state income tax payments returned, according to WGBH.

It is presently unclear when Massachusetts would issue the checks. However, a state auditor has until Sept. 20 to calculate what surplus there is. The Department of Revenue could then start issuing the tax credits immediately after.

New York

Last week, Gov. Kathy Hochul, D-N.Y., announced that the state would send out stimulus payments worth $270 to at least 1.75 million residents to help them cope with rising inflation.

The checks will soon be sent out by the New York Department of Taxation and Finance and are expected to arrive in bank accounts and mailboxes by the end of October.
